The Midtown International Theatre Festival (MITF) Deadline Extension Plus Discount!

The Midtown International Theatre Festival (MITF) is currently gathering projects for its sixteenth season. The MITF is the third-largest theatre festival in New York City. It also has the biggest ratio of paid, professional staff to participants. It’s a comfortable place to preview your work, whether you’re new to producing or have commercial ambitions. (Last year 4 MITF alumni shows were playing Off-Broadway simultaneously!) And our Midtown location can’t be beat for access to industry and general theatregoers!

13th Annual Fresh Fruit Festival (July 6-19, 2015; New York, NY) – All Out Arts is now accepting submissions for the 13th Annual Fresh Fruit Festival, New York City’s grassroots, multidisciplinary international festival of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer arts and culture.  A cornucopia of various forms of artistic expression, the festival will occur July 6-19 at The Wild Project in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Thanks to the generosity of New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and others, there are no submission fees for early applicants, and no performance fees are required. The Fresh Fruit Festival’s goal is to present the whole spectrum of LGBTQ lives as expressed through Performance Art, Dance, Theatre, Video, Film, Spoken Word, Graphic Arts, Music & various other forms of artistic expression. Submissions in all artistic disciplines & lengths are considered for presentation as long as they highlight or showcase a spectrum of the LGBTQ experience, and are finished, self-produced shows. The Festival provides AEA-approved performance venues & insurance, marketing & publicity assistance, ticketing services, professional theater staff (logistics manager; a light or sound technician; front of house), repertory lighting plot & sound system, networking events & more! Thespis Theatre Festival (New York, NY) – All Genres of shows are welcome. If your show has already had a run (in theaters or in other festivals) you can still participate, but only with a completely new cast and crew. Click here for how to submit: thespisnytheaterfestival.com. Festival runs from June 15 thru August 31, 2015. Non-Union and AEA shows accepted. No fees required to submit your play. This is a long festival (12 weeks) that allows all shows: Prime performance times, amazing awards, the opportunity for all festivals cast and crew members to attend every show in the festival for free, special professional guidance for playwrights staging their first show to help them make their performance a success, answers to all questions in a matter of hours and most often by the festival’s founders, and knowledgable staff, including a professional lighting and sound system to add color, depth and unexpected elements to each scene, a free tutorial on how to use the light/sound/projections system and expert technical guidance on how to paint the mood of your play. You’ll get a five-hour tech rehearsal just before your first performance instead of being rushed within a tech time that is merely double your show’s run time, free box office management/venue handling during performances, storage for your props and set pieces during the length of your run, free use of props and set pieces owned by the theater (an incredible collection- not just chairs and rehearsal blocks, but real furniture), saving you transportation time and money, and an extremely low participation fee. Elevator Music 2: Performative or Installation Proposals Vintage Elevator Installation @ Gallery Aferro 2nd Floor (Gallery Aferro, Newark, NJ) – Musicians, poets, artists and performers are invited to submit proposals for public presentation usage of a lovingly refurbished, decommissioned vintage elevator on permanent installation at Gallery Aferro. The elevator is 45” deep, 53” wide, 83.5” tall, and has been repainted with historically appropriate green color scheme inclusive of the original deco motifs in gold and yellow. There is lighting and a working scissor gate. All of the original brass controls have been restored. It has been appraised by an elevator expert as being a very early Otis model based on single digit model number, and dates from Newark’s era of ornate retail environments. The scale and siting of the elevator means that proposals could be for intimate audiences of as few as 1-3 people at a time, or for amplified performances shared with a larger audience via live-streaming, projections, or other means. Proposals may incorporate usage of our main gallery, located one floor down from the elevator site. The elevator space is dynamic, small, and intimate. It lends itself to innovative and experimental types of performance or presenting and we are open to any type of content within the space. All the submission fees from these proposals will be used exclusively to support Gallery Aferro’s Community Based Recording Studio as part of our expansion. Solo Show Performance Proposals (Gallery Aferro, Newark, NJ) – Artists who would like to have a solo exhibition during Spring 2016 are invited to submit bodies of work for consideration. Artist’s who have never had a solo show before are especially encouraged to apply. Selected artists will receive a solo exhibition in Gallery Aferro’s main gallery, a 2,147 sq ft space with street-view windows and high ceilings. Artists working in any media worldwide are eligible to apply. Please consider how your proposal will utilize the entire space, including the street-view platform, which is 10×30 feet. The exhibition includes a humble stipend, opening and closing reception promoted and hosted by Gallery Aferro, and a printing of 5000 post cards for the show. Proposal fees help support artist stipends. Applicants are encouraged to stop by the gallery during gallery hours to look at the space. Playfest – Harriett Lake Festival of New Plays at Orlando Shakespeare Theater (Orlando, FL) – Seeking new full-length plays that speak to the human condition in our fascinating and complicated contemporary world. They are interested in plays exploring important, challenging, and crucial social issues that affect our lives today; comedies and dramas welcome. Plays with 6 actors or fewer preferred, and they are interested in one-person shows. 7 new works will be presented as readings, and one or more may go on to be developed in a workshop or full production. Neil Simon Festival New Play Contest (Cedar City, UT) – Seeking full-length (80-120 minutes) character-driven American comedies. Musicals accepted; plays should not be overtly political. Plays must be original and may not have been professionally produced. Gulfport Community Players Script Submissions (Gulfport, FL) – The Gulfport Community Players (Gulfport, Florida) are seeking original one-act plays. Plays selected will be performed during the 15th Annual Summer One-Acts Festival being held July 9-19, 2015. Playwrights are encouraged to submit family-friendly, 5-20 minute plays. Plays should be submitted between February 1 and March 15, 2015. The Players prefer light-hearted comedies and light drama. Scripts must be simple to stage and produce. The 3rd Annual Collective 10 Minute Play Fest (New York, NY) – The Collective NY seeks submissions for the third annual Collective:10. Original 10-minute plays will be selected to premiere in a fully produced Fall run at a prominent Manhattan venue and published in The Collective:10 Play Anthology Vol. 3. Plays should engage truthful and behavior-driven storytelling. For more information on The Collective’s mission visit: www.thecollective-ny.org. The Arts & Letters Prizes Competition – For each of the four major genres (Seeking original, unpublished one-act plays in English for the Drama Prize), we offer the winner a $1,000 prize. The Wildfire National Playwriting Competition (Calgary, Alberta)  – The Major Matt Mason Collective in association with Sage Theatre is looking for playwrights 30 years of age or under to submit fresh, young scripts that embrace risk, grit and evocation. Pittsburgh New Works Festival (Pittsburgh, PA) – The Pittsburgh New Works Festival (PNWF) is now accepting one-act plays that have never before been produced. Twelve one-act plays will be selected to be performed as mainstage productions for the festival’s 25th season, which begins in September; an additional six will be selected for staged readings, to be performed the last two Sundays of August. Each of the 12 playwrights whose plays are selected for mainstage production will receive a $50 honorarium. Fusion’s THE SEVEN (Albuquerque, NM) – THE SEVEN, Fusion’s 10th annual short works festival, is one of the nation’s premiere short works festivals.  It features seven fully produced world-premieres, utilizing seven different directors and a professional ensemble cast.  The scripts are read by a jury of theatre professionals (blindly, without any identification of the playwright) and the seven highest scoring scripts will be produced.  The overall Jury Award-winner will receive transportation to and lodging at the festival.  Scripts must be based on the theme:  “UNFINISHED BUSINESS“.  All theatrical genres are acceptable (drama, comedy, musical, monologues, etc.). Weathervane Playhouse Fifth Annual 8×10 TheatreFest (Akron, OH) – Weathervane Playhouse in Akron, OH is seeking Ten Minute Plays for inclusion in its Fifth Annual TheatreFest on July 10, 11, 12, 2015. Each of the eight Finalists will receive a full production of his/her play(s), complimentary tickets to the Festival, and is guaranteed a cash award of at least $50. The top three, as voted by the audience, will receive: First Place: $350 Second Place: $250 Third Place: $150. There is a $10 administrative fee per playwright. The Relentless Award (NYC) – The Relentless Award, established in honor of Philip Seymour Hoffman and his pursuit of truth in the theater, is the largest annual cash prize in American theater awarded to a playwright in recognition of a new play. What we are looking for: Plays that are challenging, Plays that exhibit fearlessness, Plays that are not mainstream, Plays that exude passion, Plays that are relentlessly truthful The American Playwriting Foundation encourages submissions by first time playwrights, women and playwrights of color. The author of the Relentless Award-winning play will receive $45,000. The winning playwright will have the option to have the winning play published by the Dramatists Play Service. The winning playwright will have a week-long residency at SPACE on Ryder Farm, an artist residency program housed on a working organic farm in Brewster, New York. The author can elect to have a director, a dramaturg and actors join him or her while in residence on the farm. The selected play will have a national roll-out through the Ed Vassallo Relentless Reading Series, established to help bring to life and develop the winning play by presenting a series of staged readings at some of the top theaters across the United States. Berkshire Theatre Group (Pittsfield, MA) – Berkshire Theatre Group accepts submissions of plays, musicals, translations, and adaptations. All submissions are considered for productions at BTG and for development opportunities. Playwrights must submit their work either through established agents or by first sending a letter of inquiry, accompanied by a brief synopsis, cast breakdown, a ten-page dialogue sample, and a résumé. Saving Endangered Species International Playwriting Prize (International) – SES Prize is seeking 10-minute plays about endangered species. Chose one or more species as listed from CITES, the World Wildlife Fund, or other organizations that list endangered species. 8-10 plays will be chosen for a Staged Reading at a California theatre, with an award of $100usd. The audiences’ “ticket” will be a donation to a specified non-profit Wildlife Conservancy. Plays may be comedic, dramatic or for young audiences (performed by adult actors). Applause Theatre & Cinema Books Seeking Monologues and Ten Minute Plays – Applause Theatre & Cinema Books is looking for material for the following three books, edited by Lawrence Harbison: One on One: Contemporary Monologues for Kids Ages 7-15, Duo! The Best Scenes for Kids Ages 7-15, and 25 10-Minute Plays for Kids. 1. Monologues/scenes from plays (which don’t necessarily have to have been produced) but will consider material written for these books 2. 3rd Annual New Works Competition (Playhouse on the Square, Memphia, TN) – Playhouse on the Square, now in its 45th Season, is accepting scripts for the 3rd AnnualNewWorks@TheWorks Competition. A panel of local directors, actors, and designers will review all submitted scripts and select six to receive staged readings during the 2015-16 season. After the six readings have been presented, Playhouse on the Square will select two that will receive full productions during the 2016-17 Season. These two new works will receive world premieres at Playhouse’s third performance space, TheatreWorks. Along with these fully mounted productions, the two winning works will each be awarded a prize of $500. There is a $15 submission fee. Members of the Dramatists Guild need only pay $10. Call for Papers: Feminism & Curatorial Strategy (October 21-24, 2015, Southeast College Art Conference, Pittsburgh, PA) – https://secac.memberclicks.net/conference. Feminism & Curatorial Strategy: Feminist art research has been investigating art history theory and recorded significant women and other marginalized artists since the 1970s. Feminist activists continue to recognize the underrepresentation of artists who are women and minorities in collections, art sales and exhibitions in museums and gallery representation nationwide. As the statistics continue to wane for women and minorities in the arts, feminism is re-emerging as a key critical strategy in art practice, theory and curating. This discussion seeks to address how institutions small and large choose to or resist integrating feminism into their curatorial/exhibition strategies directly through mission statements and collection plans, or less overtly through organization, display and interpretation. This panel calls on scholars working across historical, modern and contemporary art exhibition curatorial strategies who are informed by a feminist perspective. We are looking to identify ways curators are using feminism to inform their methodology whether in the installation, promotion, and/or didactics of exhibitions in large institutions and smaller galleries; and how this is developing feminist and art history discourse in the twenty-first century. Banff Literary Arts Self Directed Writing Residency (Banff, Alberta) – The Banff Literary Arts Self Directed Writing Residency is a retreat for writers looking for focus and inspiration. Women in the Arts and Media Coalition Film/Video Funding Newsletter
Partnering with the LPTW, the Coalition has taken over the film, video and television funding opportunities newsletter. The purpose of the Women in the Arts & Media Coalition is to focus the power of our member organizations together and to use that combined strength to address issues of concern to women in the arts, media, and new media. We are committed to being the link between our member organizations as we collaborate to impact the various topics that affect women in our industry through advocacy, networking, and events.

WomenArts Funding Archive
WomenArts is a worldwide community of artists and allies that works for empowerment, opportunity, and visibility for women artists. WomenArts coordinates Support Women Artists Now Day (SWAN Day), an annual international holiday celebrating women’s creativity, and maintains a website with helpful information for women artists. WomenArts does not make cash grants, but the Funding Resources section of their website lists many funding opportunities.

New York Foundation for the Arts
NYFA continues to research and update information in NYFA Source, which continues to promote the mission of NYFA’s former Hotline to “empower artists by providing them with complete and accurate information about resources that will facilitate their artistic work.” Additionally, as part of NYFA Source’s ongoing development, UI will regularly produce analytical reports about the patterns of support represented in the database.

The Playwrights Center – $50/year
One of the nation’s most generous and well-respected theater organizations, the Playwrights’ Center focuses on both supporting playwrights and promoting new plays to production at theaters across the country. The Center has helped launch the careers of numerous nationally recognized artists, notably August Wilson, Lee Blessing, Suzan-Lori Parks, Jordan Harrison, Carlyle Brown, Craig Lucas, Jeffrey Hatcher, Melanie Marnich, and Kira Obolensky. Work developed through Center programs has been seen nationwide on such stages as the Yale Rep, Woolly Mammoth, Guthrie, Goodman, and many others.
