We’re building up new opportunities, and we’re organizing them differently as well:

#StageOpps will include Project Submissions (completed and self-produced), Script Submissions, Onstage, Backstage, Funding, and Residences. (We may only have a few opportunities each month for actors, composers, designers, and women whose work fits in some of the newer categories, but it is important to us to broaden our base, and to build the available opportunities up however we can over time.)

We will also have a Special Opp every month for both Stage and Screen. This Special Opp will either be just for newsletter recipients, or recipients will be given special attention. There will be a code for the subject line of your email to denote that your submission is through the Special Opp. To receive this month’s submission code, send an email to specialoppscode@gmail.com.

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY

**POW (Professional Older Women’s) Theatre Festival** is seeking plays that feature major roles for women over the age of 50 for a planned festival in NYC in Fall 2015 (location TBA; the original POW Theatre Festival was at the Public Theatre). Any length or genre is welcome–dramas, comedies, musicals– but at least one of the LEAD roles in the piece must be a female character over the age of 50.

This opportunity is being offered in advance to recipients of #StageOpps and will not be publicized other than through this newsletter until early 2015.  Please include our special code (see above) for entry.

New York Musical Theatre Festival Next Link Project (2015, New York, NY) – Awards 12 subsidized production slots in the festival to new musicals. Selected projects receive automatic acceptance to the festival, production deposit waived, access to the Next Link dramaturg team, access to exclusive industry networking events, and substantially discounted technical support. Mead Theatre Lab (2015/2016 Season, Washington DC) – Intensive program for performing artists and independent theatre companies, musicians, dancers, choreographers, and filmmakers, as well as producers and arts organizations presenting performing arts in any genres, with an emphasis on work that explores provocative new ideas. They are especially interested in productions that offer new perspectives and presenting techniques. **Kentucky Women’s Writers Conference 2015 Prize for Women Playwrights** (February 2015, Lexington, KY) – Accepting submissions for the 2015 Prize for Women Playwrights at this link. The Kentucky Women Writers Conference awards a biennial Prize for Women Playwrights to bring more scripts by women to the stage, through a collaboration among our program, a partnering theater, and a guest judge. The winner receives a world premier production for a paying audience plus a cash prize of $500, and the winning script will be workshopped prior to its production. Actors Theatre of Louisville 2015 National Ten-Minute Play Festival (January 2015, Louisville, KY) – Established in 1989, the National Ten-Minute Play Contest remains one of the most enduring and significant means by which the literary staff at Actors Theatre of Louisville connects with American playwrights and is introduced to vibrant new voices for the stage. We consider all submissions for the Heideman Award—a $1,000 cash prize given out each January—as well as for production in the Apprentice/Intern Tens and the Humana Festival of New American Plays. An annual event that takes place in January, the A/I Tens consist of a bill of 8-10 world premiere ten-minute plays, fully produced at Actors Theatre of Louisville and performed by our Apprentice Company of young actors. **The Ebell of Los Angeles Playwright Prize** (2015, LA) – The contest is open to female playwrights who are residents of California, and Ebell members may apply although they may not serve as judges or readers. The first-prize winner is awarded $6,000 and a staged reading, followed by supper at the historic Ebell of Los Angeles. Second-prize winner receives a $1,000 award. The Griot Theater Festival (2015, New York, NY) – Seeking African American Playwrights from the New York/New Jersey Area. Plays must be between 40 and 50 minutes long. All plays must be unproduced works, this festival is for Non-Union/Non-Equity members only. Application must be complete with: A 100-200 word synopsis of the play, the complete script, your telephone number and home address and the telephone number of someone else in your production that they can contact, and your bio. id Theater Seven Devils Playwrights Conference (June, 2015, McCall, Idaho) – Seeking full-length plays in any genre or style, particularly works that embrace, explore and challenge the diverse geographical, philosophical, cultural, aesthetic, and political landscape of the American experience – rural and urban, east and west, coastal and inland. 4 playwrights will be invited to participate in staged readings and will be provided with transportation, housing, access to a car, and a modest stipend. 2-4 playwrights will be invited to participate in a Playwrights Intensive Program of Sit Down Readings and will be provided with housing and access to a car during the conference. **The Ruby Prize for Women of Color** – Southern Rep is pleased to announce that it will accept submissions for The Ruby Prize, effective immediately. The $10,000 annual award is named in honor of Ruby Bridges, who showed incredible perseverance in the face of formidable obstacles. The Ruby Prize seeks to support women playwrights of color whose work expands the reach of American theatre in the face of formidable obstacles. In partnership with Hedgebrook, winners will receive a ten-day writer’s residency in addition to a cash prize. This program is a part of Southern Rep’s ongoing effort to develop new American plays, support a diverse community of artists, and incite meaningful dialogue within the community. **Artemisia’s Fall Festival** (Fall 2015, Chicago) – Seeking plays that are full length and must be carried by a woman. We require a leading, female protagonist. Artemisia produces plays that empower women.  Due to the number of submissions we receive, submission is limited to ONE play per writer.  If you submit more than one play, your submissions will NOT be considered.  Full-length is defined by a playing time of 90 minutes or more. **Jewish Women’s Theatre Culture Klatch** (2015 Season, Los Angeles, CA) – Gathers women in homes to listen to new stories and share thoughts, while enjoying coffee and dessert! Seeking submissions of plays, monologues, poems, essays, stories, songs, etc. that have an element of Jewish resonance and feature women or a woman’s point of view. Works may be of any length, but short one-acts (10 minutes maximum) and monologues (7 minutes maximum) are preferred. Plays should be topical for the 21st century and have small casts. Previously produced or published work is welcome (include production and/or publication history). Submissions should address the season’s themes: March salon “Uncuffed:” This funny, poignant, perfect for Passover show explores how Jewish women break the ties that bind.; May Salon “Reckoning with Dad:” Whether we love or hate the father figures in our lives, there comes a time when we must make war or peace with them.   Be prepared for an evening that is as often brutal as it is amusing. Technical Director at Montclair State University (Starts January 5, 2015, Montclair, NJ) – ACP’s Technical Director is responsible for the supervision, operation and maintenance of The Alexander Kasser Theater’s scene shop, stage and all staging equipment (including soft goods, stage platforms, orchestra shell, and orchestra lift) and theatrical rigging system and equipment, as well as for ensuring a safe work environment in these areas, which are essential to student and professional creative practices. FUNDING

The Richard Rodgers Awards for Musical Theater – Administered by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, these awards subsidize full productions, studio productions, and staged readings by nonprofit theaters in New York City of works by composers and writers who are not already established in this field. The term “musical theater” is understood to include musicals, plays with songs, thematic revues, or any comparable work. Submission of innovative and experimental work encouraged. Submitted works must be of significant length to fill an evening, and may consist of a group of smaller, related pieces. The Emily List Fund for Performing Arts Therapy – Supports theatre, dance, and music projects aimed at helping the sick and disadvantaged in the interest of making their lives better and brighter through the performing arts. Grants of up to $1,000 to fund instruments or equipment for a music therapist working in a hospital; scholarships for young people to attend theatre camp; travel expenses for a chorus or theatre group; space for a dancer working with disabled or elderly people; payment for an instructor teaching arts to patients; tickets for groups to attend theatre performances they otherwise could not… and any other proposal along those lines. Playwrights’ Center Jerome Fellowship (July 1, 2014-June 30, 2016) – Provides emerging American playwrights with funds and services to aid them in the development of their craft. Fellows spend a year’s residency in Minnesota receiving Center opportunities including readings and workshops with professional directors, dramaturgs, and actors. Four $16,000 fellowships will be awarded; fellows will receive $1,500 in development support. Sundance Institute Theatre Lab (July 2015, Sundance Resort, UT) – 3-week play development retreat that provides a private creative environment for playwrights, directors, composers, and librettists to develop new work with the support of dramaturges and full casts. Applications welcomed for projects at any stage of development from playwrights, directors, composers, ensembles, performance artists, and choreographers. Plays without directors will be matched with directors. Submitted work may not have been previously produced. Both established and emerging theatre artists are invited to apply, as well as artists making transitions from areas outside of theatre. Creative Arts Residencies at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center (August 19-November 27, 2014, Bellagio, Italy) – 4-week residencies between August and November, 2012. Open to composers, novelists, playwrights, poets, video/filmmakers and visual artists from around the globe, with the goal of bringing together people of diverse expertise and cultures in a thought-provoking creative environment. Spouses/life partners may accompany the resident, or may apply for a concurrent residency. The Center also offers collaborative residencies for two to four persons working on the same project. Residents will engage with each other over meals and informal presentations, and interact with the participants of international conferences hosted at the Center. Applicants must demonstrate a history of significant achievement in their discipline. Individuals from developing countries and young artists with significant accomplishments — exhibitions, publications, performances — are particularly encouraged to apply.
