(NY, NY) On Her Shoulders is pleased to present a staged reading of The Verge by Susan Glaspell, directed by Melissa Attebery. The Play in Context, a special component contextualizing the script in its time and place, is presented by Andrea Lepcio in pre- and post-performance discussions. Doors open at 6:30pm for a 6:45pm curtain; tickets are free to the public. The performance is at the New School for Drama, Lang Student Center, 55 West 13th St., 2nd Floor. Susan Glaspell was an early 20th Century playwright, actress, director, novelist, biographer, poet, and journalist. She also founded the Provincetown Players with her husband George Cook and discovered Eugene O’Neill. Most famous for Trifles, Glaspell wrote 14 plays including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Allison’s House.

Her last play, The Verge, is set in 1921 just after World War I. In this expressionist exploration of a woman’s struggle against societal and familial expectations, Claire Archer desires to create new plant life forms in her greenhouse. Her husband, daughter, sister and friends try to divert her from her quest, but Claire is determined to break free. Form mirrors content as realism fractures and strange things are made new.

On Her Shoulders was founded in 2012 to presenting staged readings of plays by women from across the spectrum of time and place, with contemporary dramaturgs contextualizing–and in some cases adapting– them for modern audiences. The program seeks to make it impossible to deny or ignore the great tradition and value of women’s contribution to the theatrical canon. On Her Shoulders intends to motivate producers and directors to champion and produce these plays in New York and regionally, and to incite audiences to demand to see them. http://onhershoulders.weebly.com

The Play in Context, the dramaturgical and scholarly presentation component to the program, is sponsored in part by the League of Professional Theatre Women, a not-for-profit organization promoting visibility and increasing opportunities for women in theatre since 1982. http://www.theatrewomen.org

The Verge is the third offering in On Her Shoulders’ inaugural season, curated by Susan Jonas, which consists of one reading per month through March of 2014.
